Free 03:22
If you think that I wouldn’t I would do it again You can lay your judgments down I know who I am So I’ll take them I’ll put them in the middle of the sea You are free If you couldn’t work it out I will lend you a hand Everything you see from your high horse, you must understand Will one day be lost to the planets and the stars To be free So what could you want from me? I’m just like you- just free You can lay your burdens down you don’t need them here We’re all busy caught up in our own science and fear So go take them, go put them in the middle of the sea Coz what could you want from me When I’m just like you just free? Yeah what could you want from me When I’m just like you? Just free

Bolt 02:12
Run, run, he runs very fast He wins, wins every race He turns around before the finish line to watch the others cry He prays to God, thinks of his sweetheart He left sitting under palm trees She looks up and sees a strong wind and she thinks of him Run, run but don’t leave me My life is not easy I want the best for you but I have dreams too Why can’t we both win? She’s so proud it breaks her both ways Her whole life she ached for him To dream big and live the good life, but live it by my side Run, run but don’t leave me My life is not easy I want the best for you but I have dreams too Why can’t we both win?

Get Involved 04:01
When I met you that first time, oh the beer had made us blind But something lit a path between our minds And the taxi ride back home was a trip all of it’s own And something sat on our shoulders and told us to stay open That night So why can’t I feel this way? And why would anyone say That I shouldn’t get involved When love I am already sold on you? All the people in your house, you don’t want them to find out But that doesn’t really bother me at all Let them gossip let them judge, let them bitch about our love All of these opinions when all we want is this one thing For ourselves So why can’t we feel this way? And who are these people to say That we shouldn’t get involved? Well love I am already sold. So why shouldn’t I get involved? Boy I’d like to get involved with you.

Out on a wire you take a chance Wait for the wind to blow To take you somewhere to bring you back Give you the courage to go Out on the weekend you drink it straight Look for a movement, a breeze Your boots are heavy. Your head is light It should be easy to leave Eyes out to the horizon- don’t cry I want you to fly I’ll push the clouds back for you I want it to be blue skies You love the nature. You love the birds So relaxed in the sky Your wings are tiny. Your dreams are huge It’s such a burden to fly Eyes out to the horizon- don’t cry I want you to fly I’ll push the clouds back for you I want it to be blue skies

Looking out, it draws me in I watch the planets rise, then explode again The sun was in my eyes, and I stared straight back It will take more than the universe To burn what we have And I for one will not have that Underneath the stars, watching from the bay You were on the beach, calling out my name And I was in that boat, drifting out to sea Clinging to a lifeline- your love for me In the dark it’s hard to adjust When every single star is a threat to us The moon is overhead, falling in our eyes But if it lights up this line between us It might save our lives Underneath the stars, watching from the bay You were on the beach, calling out my name And I was in that boat, drifting out to sea Clinging to a lifeline- your love for me

Lights Ahead 05:07
Lights ahead, road beneath me. Nothing’s gonna change And if it does I’m leaving, and taking you with me David You dream about living with your friends And I dream about dying with the stars Not everybody’s dreams come true, but mine will I promise you Write your name on my arm So I don’t forget who you are And when the rains come I’ll lock all the doors and tie you close to me Past behind, you beside me. We could never stay We let the grass grow too long And all the birds are flying south for the winter David Write your name on my arm So I don’t forget who you are And when the rains come I’ll lock all the doors and tie you close to me Coz I’ve waited for too long to just let you move on My arm is so heavy with the name that carries All the blood to my heart David Write your name on my arm So I don’t forget who you are And when the rains come I’ll lock all the doors and tie you close to me I’ll lock all the doors and hold you close to me

Cat & Bird 02:41
I’m stuck way up in this tree Ready to fall to my eighth life Wondering if you could love a feline Thinking that I might as well try You are a mystery to me Every time I see you blowing past I want to hold on to you and ask "Isn’t this the best day of your life?" Whatever you’re saying now- Oh my god The only thing left to do- Feed me to the dogs All of the days leading to now I’ve been doing things I hate for you Knowing that they would relieve your blues Hoping that you will conclude the truth Don’t let the stereotypes win You and I can find a way around All of the naysayers in this town Ignore the stares of tiny minded crowds Hold my hand in the winter And it will melt like fish And I know you will still love me When my leg ends at my wrist

I’m frustrated. I’m not losing my mind. I’ll give my money away, trade it for an escape And leave my boredom behind I contemplated giving my guitar away Moving out of my house, throwing all my stuff out But what difference would it make? I know there must be more Than my bedroom and the video store From these little islands all I see are stars I wasn’t looking, wasn’t looking for a fight If anybody asks I’m out the back on the grass Looking up at the sky I see you up there, hanging out in the clouds Shaking aeroplanes, listening to radio waves Can you hear me now? I know there must be more Than my bedroom and the video store From these little islands all I see are stars It’s complicated. It’s really hard to explain I love the blue and the green, but somewhere in between My fucking hair’s turning grey Maybe I don’t need anymore Than my bedroom and the video store From these little islands I can see all those stars

All my love for you in a cup, in a bottle When I save it up it evaporates Now it’s in the air and it’s leaving the country Now it’s every where I want us to be So don’t forget- I’m your future I’ve been your past for years now Even if you don’t see me I’m the reason you’re here now All your favourite things in a pile by the laundry Make me wonder why I would ever leave For a distant dream that may or may not bring That happy ending So don’t forget- you’re my future You’ve been my past for years now Even if you don’t see me You’re the reason I’m here now All our love boxed up, no this house can’t contain it And this suburb gets smaller every year So we let it spill through the streets, to the city Where it washes through unnoticed So don’t forget- it’s our future It’s been our past for years now Even if we don’t see it It’s the reason we’re here now It’s the reason we’re here now

Open 04:28
Under a dark blue sky you tried You tried to make me feel better I knew the mist would rise but the lies The lies were thick and so bitter Under a wilting tree you wrapped A blanket around me Oh and it felt so sweet I let I just let it be And I won’t hold you down You’re on your own for now Over those aching words we heard We both heard the sun rise We lay above the earth and watched Our bad feelings die Under the morning sky we sat In the park and felt better We threw our hands up high And let the past pass us by Do not let me down We’re on our own from now

Black Light 04:30
Under a black light, way down a back street I am there, I am watching you You might feel something, you will see nothing But I am there. I clear the way for you Last night I dreamed your eyes were my eyes Your big browns over top of my muddy colours And when I woke I saw the stars in your head And I knew that you were for me I wear your eyes and I don’t see any others Over an ocean, under the same sun You are here, you are keeping me Under a feeling, over a fire I let it burn. It clears the way for me Last night I dreamed your eyes were my eyes Your big browns over top of my muddy colours And when I woke I saw the stars in your head And I knew that you were for me I wear your eyes and I don’t see any others

about

'Cat & Bird' is the sophomore album from Anna Coddington. It explores a more guitar driven angle than her debut 'The Lake', and takes a broad lyrical scope that interprets dreams, dreams of alternate realities, and analyses what it means to be a human being in the context of an ever-expanding universe.

Cat & Bird was recorded live at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, NZ with Anna's expert band: Ned Ngatae on guitar, Riki Gooch on drums, Mike Hall on bass, and L A Mitchell on keys. Additional vocals and guitars were recorded at Anna's home studio with Ned Ngatae who co-produced the album alongside Anna.

From the supremely melodic opening track to the bouncy title track to the intense closer, Cat & Bird is a journey through ordinary life and extraordinary fantasies, told by a talented lyricist with an open heart.
